Apology

FactWire’s website and internal system have recently been attacked. Despite our technical staff already working hard to protect our systems, FactWire learned on May 3 that our newsletter delivery system was also hacked on April 14. The IP address shows that the hacking was done from Hong Kong and that it had obtained access to the registration records of our newsletter subscribers. We sincerely apologise to all the affected subscribers for this.

The information accessed include the email addresses of more than 3,700 subscribers registered from July 2017 to January 2021, and the registered names of around 1,000 subscribers registered from November 2018 to October 2019.

Please note that only the registered names and email addresses on our subscriber list were accessed, not those on our donor list. We could not see any record of the information being exported, but there could be a possibility that the hacker had recorded the accessed information using other methods.

Again, we are deeply sorry for not being able to properly protect the information of our subscribers. We had immediately stopped using the system once we were informed of the incident. We have also immediately evaluated the security measures taken upon all our systems to ensure that all the personal information that we collect, including those of our donors and whistleblowers, are stored securely.

The delivery of newsletters is temporarily suspended since time is needed for a new system to be built. Meanwhile, please visit our website and social media platforms to read our reports. Please accept our apology for any inconvenience caused.
